Despite my permanent residence being in hot, sunny New Orleans, it seems like this summer, my travels have me chasing the storm clouds. But in honor of finally getting home to a trillion percent humidity (and hearing that the rest of the country has been dealing with much of the same) I thought it might be time we talk hydration.
Ever hear how many glasses of water your supposed to drink in a day and have a mini conniption? Sames. It’s a little overwhelming, especially if your out of the habit of hydrating. But luckily, you’re talking to your friends at Wave Soda. And we are (self-declared) hydration experts. Here are a few of our favorite tips for keeping your body happy and hydrated through the heat of the summer.
I know what you’re thinking. DUH. But honestly, is anyone really sure of how much water we’re supposed to drink in a day? The word for a while has been 64 ounces. Or eight 8 ounce glasses. Or a half gallon. AKA: probs a lot less than we have been drinking. But there are a couple things you can do to promote more drinking throughout the day. The easiest is finding a reusable water bottle that you love. If you’re happy to carry it around, then you will, indeed, carry it around. What’s ya Flavor?
Did you know there are just some people who just don’t like water? Hello to you, water haters! I once had a roommate who couldn’t stand sipping plain ole’ water… that is, until I started leaving a jug of infused water in the fridge for her. (What can I say? I like my friends hydrated.) Put some watermelon, cucumber, lime, mint or elderflower in a water pitcher, fill her up and pop her in the fridge overnight. By morning you’ll have something that works like water, but tastes even better! You could also try carbonated water, or a mix of the two… and keep a case of Wave Soda handy. (I mean it’s just lightly flavored, carbonated water with a touch of caffeine… what more do you need?)
FEED the Thirst
When you’re drinking as much as you should be, there certainly comes a point in the day where you’re really over consuming any more liquid. So in between glasses, have some hydrating snacks. Fruits and veggies like watermelon, grapefruit, pineapple, cucumber and celery have high water content and are great for replenishing water loss. Avoid Dehydrating Foods and Drinks
When it’s this hot outside, sometimes we have to make a sacrifice here and there in order to keep our bodies happy and highly functioning. When a heat wave hits, avoid consuming too much alcohol, caffeine or salt. Those sweet devils take some water from your body with them as they pass through. I’m by no means trying to take your salty snacks and post-work drinks from you! Just be mindful of intake and replace when you can.
