To start off, let’s figure out what tangerines are exactly, and what makes them different from their citrusy family members. Tangerines are a subclass to the Mandarin Orange – a master group name in citrus that originated in China. In the Mandarin family there are tangerines, satsumas, clementines and honeybells. Tangerine is the tangy, middle-of-the-road cousin. Not as sweet as dainty Clemintine or soft Satsuma, but not as tart as the wildchild Honeybell.

Tangerines are packed full of potassium and folic acid, a B vitamin that is necessary to every human body. Potassium helps the blood flow to your brain leading to better focus, and folate has been linked to the reduction of Alzheimers. And yes, I said baby making! But not that kind. When mom is cooking up baby in her belly, a balanced amount of folic acid in her diet will help baby form red blood cells and significantly decreases the chance of birth defects.
