Creative Ways to Cut Back on Plastic

I heard on a podcast recently that, with anything, if you can do it, there’s hope humanity can do it too.

If you can’t, then neither can we. I don’t know about you, but that really struck a chord for me. Especially in terms of recycling. We are producing 300 million tons of plastic annually, 50% of which is intended for single use. 8 million tons end up in our oceans every year. That’s equivalent to five grocery bags filled with plastic for every foot of coastline in the world!!! (plastic-pollution.org)

Based in San Diego, Wave Soda calls the beach it’s home. And so, we’re dedicated to the cause of keeping our oceans clean! So here are a few tips and tricks to cut down on your plastic waste.

Skip the trash bags

Forget about the plastic trash can liners. If it suits you, go for none at all. If you don’t have the ability to hose out your bin regularly, line it with some old newspaper.

Mason Jars

What can’t these babies do? They can take the place of your plastic tupperware, plastic water bottles or on-the-go iced coffee cups. Plus, they’re your safest bet for making sun tea outside!

Metal straws

Keep a few in the house, one in the car or in your backpack. Ask for your drinks sans straw, then pull out your own. It’s not weird! It’s saving the turtle bebes.

No more paper towels!

I know they’re paper towels, but they’re wrapped in plastic. Plus, why not cut back on waste altogether? Instead try these reusable cotton cloths that you can just toss in the wash. They’re perfect to replace paper towels, napkins and sponges.

Find the nearest co-op

Most co-ops offer things in bulk and without packaging. Bring your own jars or bags and load up on nuts, coffee, beauty products, produce and more. Find a store close to you using Literless.

Any little bit of change helps. And if you can do it… there’s hope for the planet yet!
