Happy Thursday Wave Soda lovers! Are you ready to learn?
You may not be familiar with the word aspartame, that's totally okay!
In today's post, I will go over what aspartame is, how it affects your body, and what you can drink instead.
I Give, What Is It?
In simple terms, aspartame is an artificial sweetener and a popular one at that!
If you've ever ordered coffee at a breakfast joint, chances are they offered you some aspartame on the side.
Aspartame is most commonly sold under the name NutraSweet or Equal. It's also regularly found in products labeled "diet". (Like diet soda or reduced-sugar fruit juice).
The reason it's so bad??
When your body processes this aspartame, it breaks it down into methanol. Research has proven that methanol is incredibly toxic in large quantities and even smaller quantities can be concerning.
Okay, Smaller Words and More Examples
Right, so methanol is toxic and it's caused by consumption of aspartame which is found in artificial sweeteners and diet products. Got it!
Now how does it affect you and your body?
There have been a number of claims that aspartame can create/has been linked the following conditions and ailments:
- Weight gain
- Birth defects
There continue to be ongoing research studies held to verify these claims.
The Good News
There are still plenty of alternatives!!
I understand how frustrating it can be when you are trying to do something healthy and good for your body, and then find out you are just hurting it in another way. (I just found out I have a sensitivity to broccoli and spinach, like are you kidding?!)
All of you who have been trying to cut back on sugar, I feel for you.
The good news is that there are still plenty of sugar-free or reduced-sugar options out there that don't contain aspartame.
One of those (and my personal favorite) delightful options is yours truly, Wave Soda!
