7 Things to Add to Your Morning Routine For More Energy
I have always preferred pairing productivity with the company of the moon. And for me, that meant being a sleep-all-day, hiss-when-they-open-the-blinds kind of gal. But, alas, I am no longer 21, and with the aging process comes this annoying sense of responsibility. Where I could once snooze soundly throughout the day, now 10am feels quite like I’m pushing it. I will admit, this is a more recent development. And my transition into a morning person hasn’t been an easy one.
Now, I know you’ve heard about “tailoring a morning routine for yourself” so many times that you kind of want to throw something at me for even suggesting I might have new information. But guys… I, the eternal late riser, have found a morning routine that sort of makes the process of waking up the best part of my day.
Here are 7 things I do every morning that get my head right and my energy up.
1. Make a list the night before
To-do lists are sort of my thing. I like to make a “Tomorrow To-do List” every night in bed, right before I go to sleep. Organizing your thoughts before you close your eyes keeps your mind from anxiously running and keeping you awake. It also means that you can start crossing things off as soon as you wake up, making you feel accomplished right off the bat.
2. Drink a glass of water
You know that your body gets dehydrated while you sleep. You know dehydration makes you feel lethargic. You know this! So just chug a glass of water and you’re good! Plus that’s the first thing you can cross off your to-do list.
3. Stretch it out
As soon as I get my feet on the floor, I pad over to my yoga mat so I can roll my bones out and wiggle out any sleepy stiffness. A couple sun salutations, forward folds, inversions and backbends makes your body feel good, gets your blood flowing and energizes you for the day.
I know it can be really hard when you’re first starting, but the benefits of a morning meditation are too many to count. And the best part is that there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. If quieting your mind isn’t for you, a mantra or guided meditation might be a better option. Apps like Breathe and Buddhify let you choose a feeling you would like to focus on or cultivate so that you can tailor your meditations to suit whatever you need in the moment.
5. Water ya plants
It helps your plant babies thrive and it gets you connected. A good time had by all!
6. Caffeine with a splash of MCT oil
These two have proven to be a dynamic duo. Give your morning coffee (or Wave Soda if you prefer bubbly, fruity goodness) a boost with a tablespoon of MCT. The fatty oils turn to ketones within minutes giving your brain added energy and focus.
7. Read some good news
Let’s be real. Reading the news these days can kind of suck. I know we have to do it and all, but before you get down to it, keep your good mood going by feeding your mind with some good news.
